Transform your legacy data infrastructure into a modern, scalable and secure cloud environment
Legacy IT is a multi-billion pound challenge for government and as recently as 2019, the UK Government spent 50% of its IT budget maintaining and trying to extend the life of outdated legacy systems. Undoubtedly legacy IT can have a significant impact on cyber and national security, operational resilience, pace of digital transformation and running costs.
In this on-demand series, we’ll show you how to transform your legacy data infrastructure into a modern, scalable and secure cloud environment that can improve data-driven outcomes – from better decision making and customer experiences to higher levels of innovation. We’ll also discuss how cloud infrastructure facilitates the sharing of evidence and insights within government, leading to fewer mistakes and increased efficiencies. Finally, we’ll examine the definition of being ‘data-driven’, which – in this context – means rethinking processes used to store, share and leverage data, and a cultural shift towards viewing data as a strategic asset to deliver departmental missions.

Agenda
Connecting data for a more proactive government
Proactive, data-driven government is all about anticipating citizen ambitions, reducing touch points and designing user-friendly services. It’s also about eliminating data silos, implementing analytics and sharing data insights. In this session, we’ll discuss how a data strategy on AWS can help government departments harness data to be more proactive and provide better citizen experiences. We’ll also examine real-life use cases of public sector organisations that have reinvented their services using data.
Speaker: Samer Madfouni - Samer is the head of analytics & AI/ML, EMEA public sector at AWS. He leads efforts to help AWS customers across Europe, Middle East and Africa reinvent their businesses using data and adopt data analytics strategies and platforms. He has 16 years of experience advising and building analytics solutions in different sectors.
Putting strategy into action: realising a modern data architecture on AWS
This session explores the principles, patterns and motivation behind modern data architecture and how it can be used to unlock value from government data. We’ll demonstrate how you can leverage your architecture for real time and batch data ingestion into a data lake alongside services for cataloguing, governance and analytics.
Speaker: Gregory Knowles - Gregory is a senior specialist solutions architect focussed on analytics and AI/ML. He works with public sector customers to leverage data and deliver business impact.
Database migration and modernisation success: Are you pressing the right buttons?
Public sector organisations are keen to realise value by moving their databases to AWS, but knowing whether to rehost, relocate, replatform, refactor or rearchitect those databases is confusing at best. Furthermore, organisational and cultural challenges can pose unforeseen delays or stall initiatives altogether. To address these issues, we’ve reviewed learnings from hundreds of AWS customer engagements and have created a list of key tenets for database migration and modernisation success. We’ll review those tenets in this session and highlight AWS solutions available for customers depending on where they are on their journey. We’ll also examine real-life use cases of public sector organisations that have realised value from their AWS database strategy.
Speakers:
Harneet Singh - Harneet is a senior data specialist at AWS UK public sector. He has 13 years of data and analytics sales and pre-sales experience, working with global service integrators and OEMs. He advises UK public sector and healthcare customers in areas such as data strategy, analytics, AI/ML, microservices and databases.
Selim Burduroğlu - Selim has 30 years of experience in public sector transformation projects, strategy and sales. As AWS’ global business development specialist for Data Migration & Modernization, he supports public sector customers in modernising enterprise workloads, from legacy databases to native cloud and open-source AWS database and analytics services.
Overcoming legacy data storage roadblocks to move towards a digital future
A report by the Modernisation and Reform Group revealed that 50% of UK Government IT spend in 2019 was dedicated to ‘keeping the lights on’, thus incurring an estimated £13-22B of risk over five years. In this session, we’ll share a methodology to escape the endless chain of legacy data storage investments, look at how to confront technical debt and discuss how to unlock the value of data.
Speaker: Gurdip Kalley - Gurdip has 20 years of experience in data storage and management. At AWS, he owns the data storage services go-to-market proposition for the UK public sector.
How to accelerate your mission with the AWS Migration Acceleration Programme (MAP)
AWS has helped hundreds of thousands of organisations migrate and modernise their digital operations through its Migration Acceleration Programme (MAP), a proven framework for cost-efficient, resilient and agile transformation. In this session, we’ll look at how MAP supports public sector organisations to assess their organization’s current readiness for operating in the cloud, to identify the desired business outcomes and develop the business case for migration.
Speaker: Katie Gifford - Katie has 5 years experience working with UK Enterprise and Public Sector organisations on transformation projects. As a migration specialist at AWS, she helps Public Sector leaders to identify the best path to cloud.
