Amazon Web Services (AWS) RoboMaker Immersion Day is an invite-only event for customers to connect directly with our engineering team and learn how to use AWS RoboMaker to easily develop, test, and deploy intelligent robotics applications.
In this workshop, you'll learn about robotics and machine learning within Amazon, get an introduction to working with Robot Operating System (ROS), and get hands on with RoboMaker by building a robotics application that will “Find Fido” using image detection. You'll have the chance to test it virtually in simulation to iterate and fine tune your code. You'll then complete the challenge by deploying the application to a physical robot to see if it can complete its mission. You can even compete with teams!
Who should attend: Robotics developers, engineers, and technical stakeholders
Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for the beginning of the day. The workshop portion will require some base-level knowledge and experience working with AWS services and/or Robot Operating System, as well as a laptop with an active AWS Account with administrative privileges.

Agenda
Time | Session | Description |
8:30 AM | Breakfast & check-in | |
9:00 AM | Welcome | |
9:15 AM | AWS Machine Learning overview | Amazon has a long history in AI, from personalization and recommendation engines to robotics in fulfillment centers. Amazon Go, Amazon Alexa, and Amazon Prime Air are also examples. In this session, learn more about the latest machine learning services from AWS, and how they can be used to build robotics applications. |
10:00 AM | Robot Operating System (ROS) primer | ROS is an open-source set of software libraries and tools that simplify the creation of robot applications. In this session, we'll review ROS basics and discuss AWS' commitment to growing the ROS community. |
10:30 AM | Break | |
10:45 AM | Introduction to AWS RoboMaker | AWS RoboMaker is a service that makes it easy to develop, test, and deploy intelligent robotics applications at scale. RoboMaker extends the most widely used open-source robotics software framework, ROS, with connectivity to cloud services. In this session, we'll review the features of AWS RoboMaker and learn how it can be used to simplify robotics development. |
11:30 AM | Workshop: Build a dog-finding robotics application | In this hands-on workshop, you'll use AWS RoboMaker to build a "Find Fido" robot application. You'll use AWS Cloud9 to develop the ROS-based application. You'll use Amazon Kinesis Video Streams and Amazon Rekognition to identify dogs in a live camera stream from the robot. |
12:00 PM | Lunch | |
1:00 PM | Workshop: Simulate and test your application | After you've built your application, you'll use Gazebo and AWS RoboMaker to test and fine tune it through simulation. You'll be able to see the camera view of the robot and determine if it's able to find Fido. |
2:30 PM | Workshop: Deploy your application to the robot | At the end of the workshop, you'll have created a robot that uses an on-board camera to search for dogs. To finish, you'll deploy and test your new application on a real robot. |
4:15 PM | Wrap-up and Q&A |
