The Internet of Things (IoT) is enabling businesses to build better products, provide new services, and improve business outcomes through a world that is increasingly connected through small, low power devices. Amazon FreeRTOS is an open-source operating system used to securely connect these embedded microcontroller devices to the cloud. In this tech talk, we will discuss security best practices for customers starting out on their embedded IoT projects, including provisioning, device authentication/authorization, secure software updates, and monitoring. Finally, we will show those lifecycle considerations in context by demonstrating an Over-the-Air (OTA) firmware update to an embedded developer board, highlighting the many security-relevant steps in that workflow.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn best practices for building a secure embedded IoT project with Amazon FreeRTOS
  • Learn about the key elements of device security including credentialing, onboarding, updates, monitoring, auditing, and remediation
  • Learn how to deploy device updates and security patches over-the-air
