In this tech talk, we will provide an overview of MySQL deployment options available on AWS, including self-managed (running MySQL yourself on Amazon EC2) and managed (running MySQL databases in Amazon RDS). We'll also cover the key differences between these options, and explain the range of managed options available with Amazon RDS for MySQL, Amazon RDS for MariaDB, and Amazon Aurora MySQL-compatible edition (including Aurora Serverless). You'll learn the basics of how to deploy, operate, scale, and monitor MySQL and MySQL-compatible databases using these services. Finally, we'll demonstrate how to easily deploy a serverless MySQL-compatible database instance using Aurora Serverless.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn the key differences, advantages, and disadvantages of deploying your MySQL databases in the cloud with the self-managed model on Amazon EC2 vs. the AWS-managed model with Amazon RDS
  • Understand how to use managed MySQL options on AWS (Amazon RDS, Amazon Aurora) to deploy, operate, scale, and monitor MySQL and MySQL-compatible databases
  • Learn how to deploy a serverless, auto-scaling MySQL-compatible database instance using Aurora Serverless
